The Four-Leaf Clovers of LA Bars

Get Your Irish Up

By Jamison Selby, About.com

If a pint of Guinness has been absent from your life for far too long, head to one of LA's best Irish pubs for an Emerald Isle infusion.

1. Casey's Irish Bar & Grille

Casey's is a Downtown watering hole with many fans and many detractors. It's an odd mix of corporate types burning off the tension from work, bar flys, and USC students. Drop in and check it out if you're headed Downtown.

Finn McCool's is almost too popular for its own good. No list of Irish pubs in LA would be complete with this Santa Monica mainstay. It's a great spot for live music and you can even buy a variety of Finn's-wear if you want your friends and neighbors to know where you get your Guinness fix.

3. Ireland's 32

Fairfax doesn't have a lock on the LA Irish pub scene. Head north to Burbank and check out Ireland's 32. It's a relaxed neighborhood favorite with great music and lots of beer on tap.

4. Limericks Pub & Eatery

Limericks is a newer addition to the Southland pub scene. It's grown into a Long Beach hot spot. Expect a crowd.

6. Molly Malone's

This bar is an LA classic. The list of bands who have played the Molly Malone's stage probably has its own wing at the Library of Congress. This isn't a place to come for quiet conversation. It's loud, usually packed, and the beer flows freely.

7. Sonny McLean's Irish Pub

Sonny was an Irish immigrant who left his native County Cork and settled in Boston. He traveled all over the his adopted nation. He even visited Santa Monica where the bar named after him by his grandson, Jim Conners, now stands. Head down to the bar and offer up a toast to Mr. Sonny McClean.

8. The Auld Dubliner

Long Beach's The Auld Dubliner is a great place to celebrate your Irish heritage, your buddy's Irish heritage, or the Irish heritage of that guy you met that one time. Almost the entire bar, including the outer facade of the building was imported from Ireland. These guys aren't kidding. They got live music and a packed house on weekends. They've had such success that more locations have opened in Tustin and Orange, with another going up in Riverside. Let's hope their fighting spirit doesn't get diluted by turning into a chain.

9. The Irish Times Pub & Restaurant

Not as famous as some of the LA icons on this list, but give it a try.

10. Tom Bergin's Tavern

Tom Bergin opened his bar opened back in 1936 as the Old Horseshoe Tavern and Thoroughbred Club. It moved to its current Faifax location in 1949. That's a pedigree. The walls are decorated with over 7,000 shamrocks bearing the names of happy customers who have come and gone over the decades. When a bar has been around longer than you and you parents have been alive, it's doing something right.
