What: Sometimes a studio back lot can be scarier than a graveyard. Check out the horror of Hollywood at this annual Halloween themed month-long series, taking place nightly from 7 p.m. onwards. Features include terror trams, mazes, shows and rides.
Taste of Downtown Burbank
When: Oct. 3
Where: San Fernando between Magnolia and Orange Grove
What: Like the name implies, get a taste of Downtown Burbank through samples from area restaurants and eateries. Drink wine and beer on the AMC Walkway and watch live music performances. Proceeds go to the Burbank Community YMCA’s scholarship fund.
Jazz on the Grass
When: Oct. 3
Where: Various private residences in Sherman Oaks
What: Private residences in Sherman Oaks open to the public to showcase top jazz talent hosted by the Jackie Robinson Foundation. Inspired by Jackie and Rachel Robinson’s private in-home jazz concert (to raise bail money for jailed freedom fighters in Washington in 1963), the event brings the intimate atmosphere of early concerts to today’s LA.
Bi-annual Art + Design Open Market
When: Oct. 4
Where: One Colorado
What: From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. over 100 artists, faculty and alumni from Art Center College of Design and Pasadena City College will sell their artwork at One Colorado. Come to this free event and shake hands and chat with Southern California creators.
West Hollywood Book Fair

Where: West Hollywood Park
What: Come partake of a day’s worth of literary programming on 15 stages, including author panels, live theatre, kids stages and areas, writing workshops, spoken word, guest speakers and book signings.
Dine LA Restaurant Week

What: Even in leaner times, Dine LA gives Angelenos a chance to eat, drink and be merry. The two-week citywide event offers specially priced three-course meals from some of LA’s best eateries, giving everyone a chance to get their culinary groove on.
Downtown Art Walk

Where: Various galleries and retailers in Downtown’s Gallery Row
What: Walk, don’t run to this monthly Downtown arts event. Really take the time to soak in the artwork at dozens of open galleries. Check out street-side vendors and experience evening talks and festivities at local retailers.
Los Angeles International Children’s Film Festival

Where: Martin Luther King Jr. Theatre and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art
What: This free event screens over 150 documentary, short, animated and live action films from all over the world for young children to teens.
Hollywood Hills Hemp Mansion Party

What: Calling all Libras and medical marijuana legalization advocates. Activist Ed Forchion (a.k.a. NJ Weedman) is hosting the Hollywood Hills Hemp Mansion Party - Lavish Libra Edition from 8:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. It’s being billed as a pre-celebration of the upcoming Cypress Hill Smokeout Festival. Ticket price ($25 for Librans, $25 presale for the rest of the zodiac) includes open bar.
