According to the California Employment Development Department 4,743,000 people are employed in L.A. County. That's a whole lot of workers. But 258,000 people are unemployed. That gives us a current unemployment rate of 5.2%, a little bit above the national average of 4.6%.
That's a sizeable amount of people looking for work. It doesn't even include people who are currently employed, but are in the market for a better job. So whatever your status, you've got a good bit of competition out there. The good news is, this is Los Angeles. Imagine job hunting in Chicago - in the winter. There are jobs out there with your name on them. Good Hunting.
Network! Network! Network!
Only about 1 in 5 jobs is ever advertised at all. People hire by word of mouth. The web is a great tool for job hunting, but remember its limitations. Use it to zero in and research your chosen industry. Get involved, take classes, join clubs, meet people who share your passions.
Networking websites can be a valuable tool. You may not realize how many connections you have. Check them out and sign up. Both of these sites are free to use.
