Blogging Los Angeles

A Nod to the Loyal Opposition

By Jamison Selby, About.com

LA is large. That is a basic fact. A rowdy legion of local bloggers have reached out online to cover the city from their own unique perspective. So don't be afraid to pay the competition a visit. Just come back home soon. I'll leave the keys under the mat.

1. Blog.ExperienceLA.com

This site is the blogging arm of ExperienceLA.com. They focus on culture and the arts. Looking for the lowdown on the latest performance at the Ahmanson? This is a good place to start.

2. Blogdowntown.com

Blogdowntown.com centers on life in Downtown LA from the pedestrian perspective. They know the highways and byways of the city's concrete heart. If you're planning a trip downtown, head here first.

3. LA.Curbed.com & LA.Eater.com

Curbed is a cool collection of real estate info, neighborhood highlights, rental prices, and real estate-related news. The same company operates the Eater websites, which focus, to no great surprise, on eating. Looking for the hottest new chef in town? They'll probably have a profile up at Eater.

5. LAcantdrive.com

If you had to battle rush hour this morning, take a few minutes and let off some steam at this site. It's dedicated to the driving challenged and the traffically impaired. They claim that Angelenos are second only to New Jerseyans as the worst drivers in the nation. They've got piles of photographic evidence that should help burn off a little of that road rage.

6. LAFD.blogspot.com

This is the official blog of the Los Angeles Fire Department. They cover fire news and emergency information. LA's Bravest are experts in dealing with Southland emergencies of all shapes and sizes. They're bound to have some news you can use.

7. LAist.com

The Gothamist family of websites includes LAist, Chicagoist, DCist, SFist, Bostonist, Phillyist, even Shanghaiist. The layout is a little mish-mash, which makes finding specific information a bit difficult. If you're in a rush, this may be not be your first stop. But if you've got some hours to surf it's a great primer into the mindset of a large group of LA bloggers.

10. LosAngeles.redfin.com/blog

The site is part of an online real estate broker, but it actually has more to offer than a standard blogmercial. The blog is focused on real estate, no surprises there. It's a good resource to explore a neighborhood before saddling up to check it out on foot. Or car, this is LA after all.

11. Losanjealous.com

Independent, opinionated, and prolific. This site specializes in covering the LA indie music scene. Great photos and daily concert picks. Give them a look.
