The Edge of Forever
Like the title implies, this one-time only performance is meant to be quite monolithic. Inspired by the end of the Mayan Long Count Calendar, this chamber operetta will appropriately take place surrounded by Mayan Revival architecture at the Philosophical Research Society. The plot follows two people destined to be together. The setting is the Mayan Yucatán Peninsula. Its first two acts take place in the past, and intriguingly, the third act takes place in the present moment on December 21, 2012.

The Journey, Joshua Tree
This particular community of desert spiritualists believes that the so-called 'end' presented by the December 21, 2012 date is in fact a beginning. So, they are encouraging people to 'look ahead' by attending their weekend retreat in nearby (for Angelinos) Joshua Tree. The gathering will encourage attendees to explore creativity and spirituality to accelerate goals and awareness. The journey (proverbial and literal) begins on December 19th and culminates on the big day, December 21st. Full weekend retreat cost is $775 (+ lodging).

Doomsday Cabaret
Melding the apocalyptic with the entertaining and lighthearted, the Doomsday Cabaret bills itself as 'a rock musical of apocalyptic proportions.' It won this year's Hollywood Fringe, and showcases the cults of experts (from the Mayan world to that of the Hopi) as they gather for one last rockin' finale. Performances take place at 8 and 11 p.m. Tickets cost $20. Although the spectacle opened on October 25th, it of course ends on December 21, 2012. But is it really the end, or just another beginning?

Mayan 'End of the World Celebration'
Celebrate Mayan 'End of the World' at the Hotel Maya in Long Beach. This celebration begins at 9 a.m. at the property's Fuego restaurant, on the big day. It will showcase authentic Mayan entertainment, live Latin music, and offer a cornucopia of Latin inspired dishes and specialty drinks (like Hurricanes and Lava flows). And, in a nod to the New Age numerological camp of Mayan believers, the hotel will also present a toast at 3:11 p.m. (which happens to be 11:11 p.m. Greenwich Mean Time). Other highlights: a 'bucket list' raffle and a special Taco Station.
