Festivals and Block Parties On Memorial Day Weekend in Los Angeles

Many Angelenos embark on the great California road trip come Memorial Day weekend. But there are also some great activities taking place in our own back yards (or at least in the So. Cal vicinity). Beyond the literal barbecue party, LA pumps up the volume with several large scale Memorial Day weekend music festivals and block parties.

Silver Lake Jubilee

When: May 26, 12-11 p.m.; May 27, 12-10 p.m.
Where: 4000 Santa Monica Blvd. at Sunset Junction
What: The folks in Silver Lake always know how to throw a banging street party. Memorial Day weekend is no different. For the third year in a row, there will be music, art, and plenty of food straight from the truck or beer garden at Jubilee. Kinky and Aloe Blacc will headline. Attendance is expected to be in the tens of thousands.

Topanga Days

When: May 26-28
Where: 1440 N. Topanga Canyon Blvd., Topanga
What: The Topanga Days country fair is a 39 year old tradition in the canyon. Join the music, healing arts and music celebration as bands like Fishbone, The Young Dubliners, Chevy Metal, The Leapin Lizards and Pato Banton rock the stage. Food vendors tempt visitors with funnel cake, vegan eats and kettle corn. A special parade takes place on Monday at 9 a.m. Tickets cost $20, general admission; $15 for TCC members and military; and $10 for children 6-12 and seniors 65 and up. Children five and under may attend for free.

JazzReggaeFest

When: May 27-28, 11 a.m.-7 p.m.
Where: UCLA Intramural Field, Westwood
What: This mega concert draws over 30,000 people for performances by leading artists like The Roots, Bobby Womack and Shaggy. This largest student-run event in the country offers picnic style seating, musical performances, a food court and many vendor booths.

LA En Vivo Block Party

When: May 26-28
Where: LA Live, Downtown
What: This crazy, fun, Memorial Day weekend block party is free and open to the public. It features over 30 hours of programming and events that celebrate LA's Latino community. That includes performances by Julion Alvarez and Don Omar at the Nokia Theatre, free cultural performances, regional food specialties (they will also have a vendor village) and more.

When: May 24-28,
Where: Oak Canyon Ranch, Silverado
What: Enrich your soul on Memorial Day Weekend at this illuminating and visionary international music, arts and sustainability festival. For the 7th year, 'Lightning' will strike in Orange County as the event presents 300 different types of yoga experiences, workshops and speakers. Come visit the Lucent Temple of Consciousness, a sanctuary made of recycled and found objects by Brent 'Shrine' Spears.' Acts on the festival's enormous roster include Bassnectar and Lucent Dossier Experience. Adult tickets range from $85 to $265 advance purchase. Tickets cost $100 for kids 13-16. Kids 12 and under enter free but must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian, no exceptions.

Simi Valley Cajun and Blues Festival

When: May 26-27, 12-8 p.m.
Where: Rancho Santa Susanna Community Park, Simi Valley
What: For the 23rd year this music festival will rock Southern California. The event features two full stages for each of the musical genres in its namesake. Acts include Billy Lee & The Swamp Critters, Nathan and the Zydeco Cha Chas (on the Cajun-Zydeco Stage), and Paul Oscher and R.J. Mischo (on the Blues Stage), among others. Tickets cost $20 for adults 13 and up and $15 for children.
