As the fate of he LA Dodgers continues to be up in the air, the LA Weekly chimes in with an interesting article about the auction for LA's baseball team.
Apparently bids were due January 23rd and the next step is for Commissioner of Baseball, Bud Selig to narrow it down to ten finalists. Then current owner Frank McCourt will hold a private auction and notify the bankruptcy judge of his choice by April 6th. The sale would be completed by April 30th.
The list of possible new owners consists of:
- Magic Johnson
- Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban
- Former Dodgers manager Joe Torre
- Steve Garvey and Orel Hershiser and their investment group
- Wall street hedge funder STeven Cohen
- Real estate tycoon Tom Barrack (owner of Neverland)
- Tony Ressler (formerly of Drexel Burnham Lambert)
- So-called "apartment king" Alan Casden
- And Tom Golisano, New York GOP political player and payroll processing magnate
We're all hoping the team goes to someone worthy who is concerned with LA (like Magic Johnson) and knows the ins and outs of the city and its connection to the Dodgers.
But, as the article surmises, let's face it, at this point McCourt, who is beleaguered and filing Chapter 11, will probably just go for the highest bidder.
